Activated Carbon

High purity activated carbon for reef and freshwater aquariums.

ReefX® Activated Carbon has highly porous granules engineered to provide a massive surface area of nearly 1000m2/g for the maximum extraction of organic pollutants from aquariums.  It has extremely low phosphate leaching, minimal ash content, and does not affect the pH of the aquarium water.

Some organic pollutants can only be removed from aquarium water by active carbon.  These organic pollutants consist of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, organic acids and phenols.  If these pollutants are allowed to decompose they will fuel the activity of many unwanted microorganisms in the aquarium, reduce available oxygen, reduce pH by increasing the CO2 and increasing nitrate and phosphate levels.  The organic pollutants also reduce the light penetration in the water reducing coral growth and colouration.

Directions for use

Rinse under tap water to remove fine powder until the water runs clear.  If placing in a reactor use immediately or if placing in a media bag you may need to weigh it down until all the air has been released.  Use in a moderate flow area of about 1000lph.  Avoid fluidisation as it will break the carbon down into powder.  Replace every 2 months.
